The daughter of a salesperson is about to get married to the butcher, but the young lover of the lady from the neighbouring convenience store seduces her during the engagement party. The new couple move, and have a child. They cannot take care of their own newborn, so they give the baby up for adoption by the young man’s mother living in a village. The young mother becomes a dancer, her father disinherits her, while the lady next door tries to find happiness within the arms of a law student, but later on she takes her old lover back. The baby dies. The butcher forgives her former fiancée, so everything falls back in its place. Just like in fairy tales.

Ödön von Horváth takes us into the musical world of 1930’s Vienna.

“Every play of mine is tragedy – they only appear comic, because they are so horrid. Misery must be shown.”

Ödön von Horváth
