The Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra from Szentegyháza (Szeklerland, Transylvania, Romania), referred to and known as “Fili” , embarks on a concert tour in Ontario in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Through the singing and music of 150 children, they wish to bring tribute to Canada for the generosity and acceptance it has shown towards the big wave of Hungarian refugees escaping the retaliations of the communist regime once the Russian army has defeated the Hungarian uprising against the communist suppression in 1956. Those dark ages lasted until 1989.

About the Performers

Children’s Orchestra from Szentegyháza

Sándor Haáz
The Children’s Orchestra from Szentegyháza was formed by Sándor Haáz, choir master, music teacher, member of the Hungarian Arts Academy, and conductor of the Children’s Philharmonic of Szentegyháza, Transylvania. Being the music teacher and choir master of the local High School, he brought under the same roof the choir of the School and the modest brass band, to build on them a splendid tool of youthful musical expression. To the orchestra has been added a string section in the earnest, and after more 800 performances, home and abroad, the Philharmonic has a tremendous pull. Children from the surrounding area are competing for the occasional freed-up place in it. Since 1990 they had visited and performed in several European countries.
