 Repülj, madár!
 Tánc
 Összetartozunk
 Szerelem, szerelem

EPILOGUE

On November 21, the Canadian tour of Kovács Nóri, under the banner “ I sing my mind freely”, has arrived on our shores. In nearly three weeks, Nóri has graced the stages of eight cities, taking her fans and the public back to a soul-refreshing  journey into the Carpathian Basin’s rich folkloric heritage.
In the 90 minutes program we could indulge in the shear beauty  of authentic folk-songs, some of them in modern arrangements, and  through a couple of Christmas carols we could ready ourselves to the up and coming festivities. It proved to be a clever selection, since  it appealed to every age-group in the audience. The performer through her spontaneous charm connected immediately with the public and,  beside describing the sometimes adventurous field-trips during which a folk-song is found, recorded, analyzed, authenticated and how it reaches, finally, the stage, she has also involved the audience in a lively sing-along. Following the concert, she stayed over for our folk-dance party, as well.

For the night-opening dinner, the credit goes, as always, to the Community Centre’s small, but enthusiastic team. It gave us great pleasure to welcome in our midst a sizeable Montreal contingent, headed  by my fellow scholarship-holder in the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Program,  Ms. Nóra Abonyi.

There were 66 souls in attendance for the concert, and we hope that the cooperation between our two cities will prosper unabated.
This event came about through the shared effort of The National Alliance of Hungarians in Canada’s member organizations. Thanks to the participants!

Seasons of Poetry
a concert-on-wheels presented by Budapest’
MultiTalent Music School

How many of us still read poetry?
Kids are the public of tomorrow. If we do not contaminate them in due time with the love of literature and arts, the muses will go silent and the temples of arts soon will ring hollow.
Our school wanted to make the difference.
First, we started to teach them materials reflecting their own interests, with emphasis on their given talents in producing the shows. Imitating, more or less poorly, celebrities of all stripes was to be avoided and discouraged.
Then, the pupils had to put their best foot forward, relying solely on their strength and abilities in producing their own show. One of the fruits of their trial and tribulation is this CD that follows the four seasons as represented in the works of Hungarian classical and living poets and songwriter-composers. Enjoy the live performance of this string of pearls given by our talented youngsters to our kids and kid-at-heart adults alike.
About the Studio:
It was on the 16th of October, 2010, that after a five day recruitment period the gates of MultiTalent Musical School opened to form and nurture young talents with the ultimate goal of staging musical shows through unconventional methods.
Our secret lied in adapting the teaching methods to the strength of each participant individually. We have tailored and developed the pieces to the strongest facet of each child’s natural talents, meshing them together, and helping the children to see the big picture and their role in it, thereby effectively creating something bigger than the sum of its parts.
Picture
About the CD:

We could have named it The Seasons in Poems, as well, because the show is a collage of poems, some sung, some recited, that complement or reinforce each other’s meaning while the seasons turn. For one year only. We did not have to dig deep, the Hungarian poetry excels in this genre too. Please, receive this string of pearls with the same pleasure that has overwhelmed us while we were lacing them together. This necklace will make kids and grandmas happy, all the same!

About the goal of the concert:
We take pride in reaching out to our brethren across the boarders around us, be it in Transylvania, southern Slovakia, Trans-Carpathians (south-western Ucraine), northern Serbia, or eastern Austria. Nowadays, the worst off are the Hungarians of Trans-Carpathians in war-torn Ukraine. Our concert series in Canada is a fundraiser meant to help us deliver to them in person our message of hope and encouragement next spring. We would like to strenghen their resilience and sense of belonging to the greater Hungarian Family, hoping that the clouds of worry and uncertainty above their heads will soon fade away.
Come join us in supporting this worthy cause!

EPILOGUE

Following Thanksgiving, on Saturday, we have enjoyed the performance of MultiTalent Studio Budapest in a lively show, consisting of a sequence of poems set to music. Entitled Seasons of(in?) Poetry, six talented teenagers, accompanied by the small orchestra of their teachers, sang their merry way through a series of modern Hungarian poems inspired by the four seasons. Two instructors, in particular, stand out as enablers, facilitators of these young talents: Attila Balogh Bodor in matters of literature and showmanship, and composer, arranger Tibor Zezula, whose vivid, inventive and varied musical contributions were at par with the written material.

The show was wildly successful. The children, who watched it with glistening eyes, did not have to put too much pressure on their parents to get hold of one of the group’s CDs.  Containing the mirror image of the show, these CDs will consolidate the pleasant memories of this evening, stealthily inculcating them with the appreciation of literature and music of higher standard.

Congrats are in order to the instructors and to the performers alike. We hope that they have enjoyed their stay with us and leave Ottawa and Canada with lasting, positive memories. The proceeds of this tour will end up helping our folks in Trans-Carpathia, the destination of their spring journey.

We thank the volunteers of the OHCC in securing the festive dinner and the room and board to the members of the group.

This event, too, was realized under the auspices of the National Alliance of Hungarians in Canada.

Csaba Cserna
Literature and Theater Woven into a Hungarian Kilt

"It would seem impossible that somebody, who honestly  and expertly tries to comprehend this strange phenomenon, called human life, would not be taken aback by life's dream-like qualities, by the realization that reality, unfailingly, is different of what we think of it. We can do one thing only: shout at the tip of our lungs — devoid of noble sentiments, but sincerely and vehemently — with a painful cry born out of our fear from evil and our longing for the good.”
Frigyes Karinthy, 1905

With these thoughts in mind will our lightly clad performer tackle the absurd and awkward memories of our lives’ questionable events, through the sometimes sour but eventually serene cheerfulness of coming to terms with ourselves.   (Dress lightly!)
Picture
The performer, Csaba Cserna, is an electrical engineer working in Frankfurt, Germany, whose love of theater of the student years was crowned by him becoming a professional actor for four years, after which he espoused the more sedate life-style of an engineer. He is a developer, not only of sophisticated electrical systems, but of literary soireés, as well. This is one of his three one-man shows.

EPILOGUE

The visit of singer, guitarist and composer Zoltán Pomázi is not a first for this popular artist. He has had previous extended stays on North-American soil with his former ensemble, The Bojtorján, including stops in Nashville, New York, Woodstock, etc. He has poured his heart out to several generations, to justified acclaim.

Tonight, he has repeated a couple of evergreens of Bojtorján, but more importantly, he has presented his new compositions, generated by the poems of Miklós Radnóti, whose life was cut short by the madness of WW II and whose widow, Fanni Gyarmati, just passed away in her 102th year. Pertinent excerpts of her dairy have been read by Ibolya Kovács, member of our community, and a number of poems have been recited by Szabolcs Szilágyi, fitting additions that made the show more comprehensive.

The presentation of this season-opening show has been possible through the collaborative effort of member organisations of the National Alliance of Hungarians in Canada.

“...The choir was founded in 1991 and it was given the name "Tiszta Szív" - Pure Heart. It rehearses and performs mostly folk, religious and secular pieces of music within and outside of the boarders.

In the past 22 years we have gone on tours to numerous countries in Europe and even performed in front of  Pope John Paul II and during our meeting the conversation included a few Hungarian sentences.

We repeatedly performed in Germany, France, Austria, and Holland, went on a tour to Sweden, Britain and in 2009 and 2011 by the grace of God we could go to 8 cities of the United States.

The dream of our choir has been to travel to Canada and spread the joy of singing with Hungarian communities there..."

Muzsikás, the most popular and renowned Hungarian folk music ensemble worldwide. After 40 years of their unrivaled career, the group has pioneered the global popularity of Hungarian folk music and helped the genre earn a well-established niche in the roots and world music scenes. In this double-bill with Glass House Orchestra, they take their Hungarian Jewish collection from Transylvania, unearthed through exacting research and years of fieldwork in the smallest of villages, and present the Máramaros material with the outstanding singer Ágnes Herczku, soloist of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble.

Picture
Grammy Award-winner Frank London acts as the bandleader for Glass House Orchestra, an international supergroup of 8 virtuosos that grew out of a project initiated by the Balassi Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center in New York to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust in Hungary. The band seeks to present an image of the incredibly complex legacy of Jewish Hungarian culture, while also creating a space for this legacy in the present day, both in Hungary and the world over. The ensemble is named after the Glass House or Üvegház, the famous building, one among 76, designated as a safehouse by Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz during the Holocaust in Hungary, which sheltered thousands of persecuted Jewish Hungarians.

Picture
The Ottawa Klezmer Band was founded by Vocalist–Cellist Floralove Katz in 1978.  Over the decades, the ensemble has garnered growing acclaim from both dedicated “regulars” and diverse, new audiences, entertaining dozens of audiences on a variety of stages. A trio of them (including Floralove Katz - Vocals/Cello; Natasha Guiller - Piano; David Renaud - Clarinet/Sax) will perform the very best of their repertoire before the Glass House Orchestra and the Muzsikás come to stage.

At the end of the night all three bands will join together for a unique and outstanding music jam. Don’t miss the most exciting concert of the year!

Where: Canadian Museum of History Theatre (100 Rue Laurier, Gatineau)
When:
7:00 PM (doors open: 6:30 PM) Monday, 15 June 2015

Please note that the concert is by invitation only.  Invitations will be sent via e-mail or phone by the Embassy for those on the list collected and provided by the Ottawa Hungarian Community Centre.
Exhibitions about Carl Lutz and renovated synagogues in East-Central Europe can also be seen in the foyer upon arrival and during the intermission.

Baranta
Presentation by Major Ferenc Vukics
on traditional Hungarian martial arts, its history, its aim, its institutions and applications in the public and higher education programs

Picture
Major Ferenc Vukics has been serving in the military since September 1987. At an early age he started to develop interest in history, literature, philosophy and sociology and psychology. He started publishing in 1988.

Baranta is a continuously developing martial art, which has been created by collecting all the movements from Hungarian body-culture, fighting and battling techniques that had been applied during our history. It is based on the knowledge of folk-culture and a still shaping independent philosophical tendency of Hungarian origin called ’social psychology’ or ’folk psychology’ (one of its founder and most quoted writer is Sándor Karácsony). At the moment, in six countries, in more than a hundred communities, about 2500 people are practising the style based on the traditional hungarian values, moral and culture of motion.

Easter Monday's traditional “sprinkling”
17.30-18.30 Egg painting
18.30-21.00 Sprinkling

Admission is free.
Potluck of baked goods and finger-foods.

Easter sprinkling is a tradition kept in Easter European countries like Hungary up to this day.

Nowadays boys and men converted to an urbanized tradition and visit the houses of girls and women and cite a traditional or non-traditional Sprinkling rhyme, use fragranted water and then they are offered decorated eggs and some food and drinks.

This tradition originates in pre-christian cleansing and fertility rituals but with Christianity it is said to refer to baptism and the resurrection of Christ. The most attractive girls got the most water to become healthy glowing wives.

Along the Ipoly river the boys used to gang up and started collecting eggs on Sunday night to be able to start Monday with scrambled eggs and bacon. They needed to go in groups because as soon as they found a girl they picked her up and tousled her to a well and poured buckets of water on her. The girls beared all this wearing their best dresses and sometimes shivering as Easter usually does not fall on a warm day either!
The boys cited rhymes like this:
Picture
I am pleading to you Mother
Show me your daughter
So her hair can be sprinkled
So it can grow long
as the colt’s tail strong
Or even longer
as long as the Danube
May I start to sprinkle?

Colourful folk-traditions are still kept in Transylvania.
In most regions the girls can return sprinkling on Tuesday!

The pictures of the nicest painted eggs made by the members of our community we will publish on our site if so requested.

Hungarian Folk 2nes
by
Ágnes Enyedi and  Soma Salamon
Picture
During the program we will hear folk tunes from those areas of the Carpathian basin where the Hungarian folk songs co-exist with the sound of the furulya, a kind of recorder. The songs arranged for various types of furulya depict a part of the life of the villagers, and some of the more important elements of their lives, such as serving in the military, love, nature. The audience will recognize some of the collections and compositions of Béla Bartók. The program will be made more colorful by the sound of the piano accordion, which infiltrated the Hungarian folk music in the past couple of decades. The tunes come from the regions of Dunántúl, Palócföld, Székelyföld, Mezőség, Gyimes and Moldva.

Ágnes Enyedi - vocals
Ágnes is the vocalist of both the Magos string folk music group, and the Tázló csángó folk music band. She regularly gives concerts with both groups, and organizes folk dance nights. In the spring of 2014, she and the Tázló band released the album entitled “Folk music from Moldva”.  She toured in North America with the Magos band in the spring of 2012 for 5 weeks.
Ágnes was the vocalist of the “Sweet-sorrow” and “Mezőség - Micro-cosmos” show series of the Hungarian National Folk Ensamble,  as well as the “Harmony Pearl” and “Wind of Spring” programs of the Danube Artistic Group. In autumn 2013, she was touring accross Nort America with the Hungarian National Folk Ensamble presenting their “Hungarian Rapsody - America” program for 3 months, during which she had 74 appearances.
Her first solo album entitled “With the love of the dove - Transylvanian folk music” edited by László Kelemen appeared in 2009.

Soma Salamon - furulya, kaval, piano accordeon, piano
In 2012, Soma was admitted to the wind instruments department of the Ferenc Liszt Music University.
He is very active, touring throughout Hungary and several other countries. In January 2014, as a member of the Buda Folk Band, he ranked second on the World Music Charts Europe toplist with the band’s album entitled "Hungarian World Folk Music”. Soma also holds the special award of the 2014 edition of the "Fölszállott a Páva” televised program.
