It's been mentioned by the Wienese bakers in the Turkish times as early as 1529, as well as around the withdrawing from those areas of the Ottoman Empire in 1683. So far the only fact we are sure of is that it is the invention of the Austrian bakers.

The common beans comes from the American continent, where the natives have been cultivating it for over five thousand years. It was only in 1530 that it was first introduced in Europe, from where it found its way to Africa, Asia and Australia. There are many types of common beans. It is of great nutritional value, contains lots of fiber and protein. In its green form it contains less protein, but still of a very significant amount. In addition, it contains minerals.
